Judging Others

Friday, September 16th, 2016

Last night I was reminded of the saying ‘never judge a book by it’s cover’. As I looked around the room I saw what would outwardly appear to be an ordinary bunch of people, enjoying dinner and chatting to their fellow diners. However, I had inside information.

As a judge of the Kent Independent Trader Awards 2016 (2015, 2014 and 2013) I had access to information that proves these people are anything but ordinary. Don’t panic, it’s nothing sinister, I’m not about to announce any criminal behaviour, far from it. The only thing they are guilty of is being part of an elite bunch. The people in the room were there because they are all amazing achievers in the Kent Business Community. In fact, the majority were finalists of the award process, an amazing accomplishment in itself. canstockphoto9817032

I consider myself privileged to be able to judge the nominations. After 35 years in business I have come across a wide range of businesses, some that would make your hair curl and some that leave you awe struck. Each year the business awards show me that there is still so much more to discover. The individual journeys are always fuelled by passion, determination and often life-changing events that turn an impossible situation into one of triumph and success.

Being a judge means that not only do I get to read about these incredible feats but I also get to hand over the award on the night, which is always a tremendous pleasure, I love being on the receiving end of a heartfelt hug and Cheshire-cat grin from delighted winners. IMG_1082

So congratulations go to an extraordinary bunch of inspiring businessmen and women and enormous thanks go to Hilary Steel and Sue Smith for organising a remarkable evening.
